ok honest review

i loved the gameplay!  it was creepy for sure

few things and this is my personal opinion

-addition of more scares and spooks

-proper backstory would be lovely

-more soundtracks and sound effects!

once again this is my personal opinion loved the game anyway keep up the good work!! <3

Thanks for the honest feedback!

We'd love to expand the game like this, but it's a matter of scope, time, and money. Hopefully, we'll be able to do that in another major update. :)

I think the Spider Crab just wants a friend.

This game really did get me, it was legitimately scary and the sound of the creature clawing toward me created such a freaky atmosphere. I think the house could have been larger and the story could be expanded on even further. Great for a short game, but if you keep working on it and expand it I'd love to see it! Also added it to my playlist here

(+1)

WOW. This was freaking AWESOME. It was short but oh so rewarding. You guys are amazing because you didn't rely on the crutch that like every horror game creator relies on now. The Jumpscare. There were no real jumpscares here, it relied solely on atmosphere and creature design and it was fantastic.

(+1)

That's great to hear - it's what we were going for!

(+1)

We had a fun time  with this one!

It's interesting to hear what it's like to play with another person in the room!

Unfortunately, it looks like you ended up with an outdated version. due to a mistake on my part. Sorry about that!

Really cool game with nice artstyle and unnerving atmosphere!

(+1)

Thanks for playing!

Very spooky and scary experience overall! This was a good game, and it was very mellow made. The environment was unsettling, and it just has that horror aspect that I feel like you hit right on for me. Good game dev!

(+1)

Thanks for the kind words - I love that moment in your intro!

That fade-out time should probably be just a tad faster...  🤔

NEW GAMEPLAY MUST WATCH!!!

I absolutely love the comic style cutscenes. The atmosphere you were able to create is also very impressive considering the graphics style. My only complaint is that the monster didn't really present any real threat. It was still creepy every time I saw it, but after the first few times it was just kinda eh, point light and carry on. I also mistakenly called it a demo at the beginning of my video, I guess that's just a habit from other itch.io games.

Glad you liked it!

I agree that the monster can be a bit of a pushover once you figure it out.  But that's actually by design! We wanted the monster to be more of a constant pressure than a real, challenging threat.

That might change if you didn't have always have a flashlight - which might happen if we expand the world and story in a future update. ;)

1) Game experience:

2) Can you play it on Linux? - Yes! You can!

Greetings from Brazil. :D

Greetings from California! :)

Glad to see that you got it working on Linux!

I'd love to support it officially, but unfortunately, I'm not comfortable publishing something that I can't test thoroughly - and I don't currently have a Linux machine.

That said, I could just publish a Linux build with a disclaimer.  That way, Linux user's wouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to play it.

Thanks great developer. Keep it up! I really liked you art(games are arts to me). Thanks to share us your good concept. I love psychological horror stories. That is fancy and intelligent.  California is pretty cool, I heard about.   :D

(1 edit) (+1)

If you want you may this step by step for your public. It's would be a explaitation before someone asks:"Do you have some that game in linux version to run this game?" Freewill, you may put that video in your explain. I wish to appreciate more art pieces from you. Might I record some others as soon as possible. Thanks. ;) I really appreciated that game. Sorry by poor english mine. <3

I'll make sure to send people your video if someone asks!

I haven't any trouble to plays windows game. But I have some issues in "Linux" version, Mr. Michael. Why? Some devs ask to me. I reply: "Because Linux is a generic OS kernels. It has been happened that I dowloading a "linux" version and it does not runs. Once that linux version it doesn't my distro( file.deb) and those are other else( file.rmp to Red Hat Linux or Arch Linux and other else). So when I'll get a game I see "Linux" version or "windows" version, I prefer downloads the Windows version, at 98% runs through out Wine application.  If you would like to do for linux, try especify what linux flavor(or distro) is. For me is good Windows version, I don't complain, buddy Michael, to download Windows version. Because it I record that video before someone comes to ask a "linux" version. Do not need a Linux version. It is wonderful running at linux, just the player knows install winehq and runs through that application. Here is page if you want redirect for linux users to install: < https://www.winehq.org/ > Its free to ware like Linux as well. Nice to meet you. I'm glad either to know you liked this explanation "how runs windows games(and application) within linux. :D <3

Thanks for playing!

I very much enjoyed this! Well polished and quite creepy!

Thanks for playing - I really like the way you narrate!

Unfortunately, it looks like you ended up on an outdated version (v0.1.1-b) due to a mistake on my part. It you're interested in seeing the improvements we've made since then, check out the latest version! (v0.2.0-b)

thank you for the kind words :) I would be curious to check out the updated version although it would most likely be for my own sake. I really like the tension and the style of horror you went with in this game. Any plans to make a sequel?

If anything, we'd go for a 1.0 release with more content and areas.

It's difficult to say what our next move is right now, but the team has voiced interest in doing a major update for next Halloween - we could so something sooner though!

(+1)

well whatever you all do i wish you the best of luck and if you need any help with voice acting i have some experience and would be happy to lend a hand :) either way I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Really cool game. The monster looks pretty freaky and  i like the back and forth between 2d and 3d.

Thanks for playing!

I appreciate you going back to see what the death is like.  We wanted to avoid including jumpscares in the game, but realized later that we might want to add it as an option. If we come back and add it, you'll see that "drawn jumpscare" you were talking about!

(+1)

I experienced some fps drops at the beginning, probably because of my computer. It wasn't that scary in my opinion, but i really enjoyed it. I love the drawed parts, it was very creative. If you can put more of these interactive drawed things (Like the drawer, where you need to click on it to make it open) in the game, it would be amazing. Thanks for this experience, i will follow your future work :)    (Sorry for my english, if it's bad)

Glad you liked it!

We'd love to add more content if/when we expand the game in the future.

If you send me your hardware specs (OS/CPU/GPU), I can look into those performance issues!

(+1)

Windows 10

AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 8 Graphics

AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx

8 GB ram

Thanks! I'll be taking a look at some performance optimizations during the next update sprint.

(+1)

Good luck! I can't wait to try it :)

(+1)

I have ideas for the game. Maybe then in the future you could add a "survival mode" where the monster will get stronger, faster over time, and there is a timer that measures the time to compete against friends.
Maybe you can add more items too. When you hear a specific sound from the monster, the flashlight will not work. You will need the new item to counter that attack. What do you think about it?

(+1)

Those are definitely some fun ideas worth considering! Replayability is something we'd like to address, and these ideas could help with that.

(1 edit)

Damn, that is a pretty good game! Not a whole lot to add, that would improve much upon the game itself. The story was short and precise, but I would definitely not mind this game and it story being explored further in the future! Now some might say that the drawings added to the game is a cheap way of making cutscenes, which I can understand, but I think it adds to the charm of the game! The game mechanics are not new, but well executed none the less. Overall the game is well rounded, scary and intense, with challenge, but not too hard. Something I would have liked, is a nice and intense chase sequence, where a more loud and fast "clicking" sound from the monster appears behind. Perhaps you face a long hallway, and your flashlight suddenly runs out of batteries, followed by a eerie and deafening screech from the beast behind you, forcing you to sprint through a set of hallways or something of the sort!

I really think the feedback system you have added is amazing, and I have made my submission to it, but I do however prefer to add my reviews here on itch.io

All in all, this game was a fun experience and quite the scare, great work!

-BH

(+1)

Thanks for the thorough feedback!

The chase sequence sounds like an interesting idea, though I think it'd require adding an additional zone. Might bring up the idea if/when we start designing a 1.0 version!

Good game and pretty scary. The quality is great as well. Unfortunately i didnt finish it. All explanation is after i play the game.

Sorry to hear about the religious conflict preventing you from finishing the game.

Would it help if we included some sort disclaimer or content warning?

Fortunately, it looks like you were able to experience a majority of the game before you needed to stop!

(+1)

Yea i got the scary experiences a little bit, it would help if you put a disclaimer or content warning. Sorry didnt finish the game tho but it was great.

really good game please check out my play through below x

Glad you liked it! Loved your reactions!

Unfortunately, due to a mistake on my part, it looks like you ended up playing an outdated version of the game (see the latest dev log). Our latest changes smooth out some of the issues you had, and has a less abrupt ending.

Pretty cool game. Short and sweet.

Thanks for playing!

I let you know on Twitter about the old version issue - sorry about that!

This was amazing. I really like the difference in animation styles! The whole game looked really clean in terms of UI too.

I fell in love with the menu lol. Also, I had probably one of my most genuine scares playing. Amazing job with the atmosphere, I think you definitely reached your intended goal.

(+1)

Thanks for playing! I'm a fan of the menu too. :)

Do you think we could have left more hints for the last puzzle? It was killing me when I saw you didn't re-read the 4th letter when you were stuck.

(+1)

Hmm, I don't think so. Idk if I said it in this video, but I tend to miss A LOT of small details lmao! So I think that was more of a user thing than a game thing.

(+1)

This game is a good one. I like the style and the hand drawn stuff to boot. Great job, man!

(+1)

Thanks! I like your narrated approach to the playthrough.

By the way, you're the first to point out the strangeness with the stair railings - it's actually a funny story. During the Game Jam, we didn't have the time to make any 3D models, and we couldn't find an asset with a low-poly railing mesh that worked in the layout... so we used a ladder!

Thanks so much for making this game Michael! I wasn´t expecting the kind of creature that came included with the house, honestly, it gave me a few scares and made me jump out of my chair. I had a lot of fun playing this, loved the style of the notes and the art as well, the creature was indeed scary and wouldn´t stop stalking me, which made the tension even creepier. Really nicely done!

Glad you liked it!

Looks like you played on an older version - the ending makes more sense after our last big update!

Ooh! Thanks for letting me know, Michael. I will definitely check it out again off camera. Did I say the art was great?? No?? Well, the art style was superb, congrats!

(+1)

Might have hit a possible glitch. I lured the creature to the circle and he disappeared. Before getting the knife and what not. May have been intended. Great game though.  The last one I played. So good!

He came back later though, right? If so, then it's intended!

There currently is no special interaction with him on the circle, but that might be a good idea!

It looks like you died a few more times than we expected - and that's on us. We're hoping to address that in the next update!

(1 edit) (+1)

def a good game idea, but I feel like if it was longer(game wise), bigger (map wise) and more dense (story wise) it would be a perfect outlast-ish type indie game, but still, good job on the good game

We'd love to - it's just a matter of time and budget!

Sorry you picked up our game by accident, but I'm glad you liked it!

This game was very effective, you did a good job at creating a spooky atmosphere and the creature plays off of one of my phobias. Great job! Can't wait to see what you do next;

Thanks for playing! Loved your reaction!

this is one of the few horror games on itchio thats actually really well made with no glitches (from what i saw) and a unique style with some stuff iv never seen in a itchio game. there is also a lot of detail in the minimal art style to the paintings changing as you go to the gravel floor of the basement sounding different than the floor boards the monster has a cool mechanic with the flashlight scaring it off and the story is decent and well presented overall 9/10 because theres always room to improve. if you want to see my reaction to everything heres the link to the video i made on this game (spoiler warning)

if you watched my video consider subscribing (its free) and i appreciate it

Thanks for the kind words!

We just pushed up an update last night that addresses some of the issues you noted in your video - I'd be curious what you'd think of the new ending!

(+1)

Good experience. The game is scary and the strange being was an excellent idea.

The illustrations were also very well done.

Congratulations!

Thanks!

(+1)

I was not expecting this to be as scary as it was. I love when games don't rely on jump scares and provide a creepy atmosphere, but this game seriously knocked it out of the park. One of the creepiest experiences I've ever had playing a horror game. I can't recommend this enough to anyone that's a fan of horror. Fantastic.

(+1)

Wow, thank you for the kind words!

You're videos have so much production value - I feel so honored!

(+1)

Hello! I played this and it was really creepy! I loved the monster and it got me a few times but i think it should be a bit more threatening because after i realized it came from the same area it got a bit less scary. Still the story and atmosphere were really really good and i really enjoyed playing! heres my playthrough if you wanna see.

Glad you liked it!

(+1)

Gotta say thank you for making such an interesting game. Really good concept and loved the hand drawn cut scenes. I would like to see what you can really do with this style.  Keep it up my friend you have talent as a creator.  The video is to see my reactions and my thoughts while in game.

We're glad you like it! And thanks for the compliment - it means a lot. :)
